The BSE Sensex rose 97.50 points or 0.49 percent to close at 19948.73, and the Nifty gained 18.05 points or 0.30 percent to finish at 5973.30. The S&P BSE Sensex was at 19,815.34, down 35.89 points or 0.18 per cent. It touched a high of 19,983.22 and a low of 19,783.88 in trade today.
Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, NTPC, ITC and Ambuja Cements were among the major gainers.
