The 30-share BSE Sensex lost 204.97 points or 1.10 percent to 18,430.85 and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 67.70 points.
Index heavyweights Reliance Industries, ITC and HDFC Bank were down 1-1.5 percent. Private sector lender ICICI Bank went down 2 percent.
HDIL, UCO Bank, Union Bank and Prestige Estates were down 4-6 percent.
